Furnace oil is use for stationary heating systems, industrial and household furnaces, power plants.
Heating oil is residual fuel oil (masut) of different viscosity. Masut M40 and M100 are used in floor steam boilers and industrial furnaces. Furnace oils is produced from oil distillation residues. The numbers in its marking indicate the approximate viscosity of the product at 50 ° C.
Light residual fuel oils (masut) F-5 and F-12 are used in ship power plants. Compared to the heating oils they have lower viscosity and sulfur content, and higher quality.
Furnace oil is used for:
- boilers of medium capacity installed in residential buildings;
- agricultural generators of low power.
The boiler heated with furnace oil has high efficiency and requires minimal operator’s participation, therefore it is in demand for heating of suburban real estate using autonomous systems.
Heating oil (furnace oil) does not have to comply strict standards for the cetane and iodine numbers, cloud point, and the sulfur content often exceeds 1%. It means that such fuel is cheaper and easier to produce than diesel fuel, and, as a result, it is cheaper.
To improve its technical parameters, heating oil is lightened. Lightening means eliminating the impurities (especially sulfurous) using special reagents.
Difference between heating oil and diesel fuel
Heating oil cannot replace diesel fuel in vehicles’ engines. This will damage the fuel system. Distillation of heating oil into diesel fuel can be done with use of special equipment with the method of deep hydro treating, but you should pay special attention to the quality of the raw materials.
How to distinguish heating oil from diesel fuel?
- Heating oil has a more intense dark brown color.
- After a short time, on the bottom of the vessel with the fuel oil you will see a sediment.
The main difference between heating oil and diesel fuel is the level of purification. Heating oil is an intermediate product between crude oil and diesel fuel, it is produced according to the technical requirements, and not according to GOST and is not subject to deep purification. And this directly affects the quality. Also, furnace fuel has higher ash content, viscosity and sulfur content, which is not good for the quality. These parameters are indicated in the quality certificate for dark heating oil. Choose the reliable and known supplier to be sure of quality and origin of the fuel.
