In gasoline engines, ignition occurs from a spark, whereas in diesel engines fuel ignites when compressed under high pressure. The exhaust gas temperature of a diesel engine is lower than that of a gasoline engine. That is, the loss of heat and power is reduced, which makes the diesel more economical.
In addition to automotive equipment, diesel fuel is used for generators of power plants, heating boilers, water and railway transport.
Cetane number
High CN determines:
- complete combustion of fuel without engine overheating,
- increase in traction parameters,
- increase of the service life of engine parts,
- increase in power and economy of diesel engine.
Each diesel engine is engineered for a specific CN, at which it will operate optimally. Therefore, a high figure is not always the best. Preferred values of the CN lie in the range from 50 to 60.
Ecological classes
The division into ecological classes of diesel fuel is due to the amount of sulphur per kilogram. Reduction of sulphur reduces harmful emissions and slows down the wear of the fuel system. Starting from 01/01/2016, the Russian Federation allows the production and use of fuel not lower than class K5 (or diesel fuel EURO 5), for which a value of not more than 10 mg / kg is allowed.
Types of diesel fuel
According to seasonal operating conditions, the following types of fuel are distinguished:
- summer – at an air temperature above 0 ° C;
- winter – from 0 ° C to -20 ° C;
- Arctic – from -20 ° C to -50 ° C.
Each type is marked with a capital letter (L, Z, A).
