Fuel oil and bitumen are residual products of oil refining At the first stage, gas is released, followed by light fractions (gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel etc.). Fuel oil is a residue, heavy viscous fraction, but not the final one. It is also processed, to get car oils, paraffin and bitumen oil – a weakly viscous or solid substance.
Fuel oil and bitumen differ in density, degree of processing and seasonal demand: profile enterprises want to buy bitumen in summer, and fuel oil in winter. Seasonality of demand is due to their main difference – the appointment.
Fuel oil
Fuel oil is a fuel that, depending on the type, is used for heating plants, furnaces, steam heating, thermal generators (furnace fuel oil) and for marine engines (naval).
The main characteristics of fuel oil are the viscosity, the percentage of sulphur, the heat of combustion, the presence of additives. For these parameters, fuel oil is divided into types.
The furnace fuel oil is divided into two main types: fuel oil m100 and m40. In the second type there are particles of diesel fuel, it is low-viscosity and has a lower pour point. The most popular fuel oil is m100, the price for which is lower than for m40.
Fuel oil for marine engines is called naval. Its difference from furnace fuel oil is in reduced viscosity and pour point, high caloric content and ash content. The types f5 and f12 differ viscous between themselves, as indicated by the numbers in the marking.
Bitumen
Bitumen is a construction material. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons that are difficult to completely identify. But the main components are asphaltenes, resins and oils. They determine the hardness and low viscosity of bitumen.
Bitumen has become an indispensable material in construction due to its adhesive (well adheres to any materials) and hydrophobic (does not pass moisture) properties.
Depending on the purpose, bitumen is divided into the types:
- Road bitumen. It is used for the construction and repair of asphalt pavements. Road bitumen is divided into viscous (bitumen BND and BN) and liquid.
- Construction bitumen. It is used in the construction of buildings and structures, in particular, for the waterproofing of the foundation.
- Roofing bitumen. It is used for the production of bituminous shingles. It can be penetration bitumen (waterproofing the base of the roof) and covering bitumen (top layer).
- Insulating bitumen. Insulation and corrosion protection of pipelines and communications.
